Rising repair costs & natural disasters making US home insurance less affordable: IRC

A combination of both the growing frequency and severity of natural disasters, along with rising home repair costs and other economic factors, have contributed to less affordable homeowners insurance, according to a brief from the Insurance Research Council (IRC).

The IRC, an affiliate of The Institutes, a provider of risk management and insurance knowledge solutions, measures affordability with the ratio of average homeowners insurance expenditures to median household income.

Police issue warning about rising home repair scams

Halton Regional Police (HRPS) have issued another warning about local home repair scams, after yet another incident within the region. 

According to the report, the fraud involves contractors travelling door-to-door selling unsolicited services. These services include but are not limited to chimney repair, general masonry work, step and driveway repairs and general debris cleaning or roof repairs and waterproofing.

Police say the suspect may provide a quote with prices lower than market value and once a deal is reached, will request a large cash payment.

Here’s why the cost of home renovations are rising

Homeowners planning major renovations this year could face sticker shock. 

The price of construction and building materials rose 3% in February from a year ago, labor data shows. But some items have  skyrocketed. The cost of construction bricks has jumped 25%, while general contractors are charging more amid a shortage of skilled workers, Wall Street Journal reporter Rachel Wolfe told CBS News.
